“Karbal Katha” is Pierrot’s Troupe’s latest play. However, instead of performing the play itself the Troupe, this time, introduces AMU Drama Club; a bunch of highly talented, highly accomplished young girls and boys. They in this play perform the difficult task of depicting the War of Karbala between Hussain and his handful companions on the one side and the powerful army of Yazid on the other. This unique presentation aptly and aesthetically uses the elements of Music, Dance and Dastangoi to re live and re create the human being’s continued struggle for Good against Evil, with ‘Karbala’ and ‘Hussain’ as one of its strongest symbols, as represented in the literary and poetic traditions of India, comprising Marsia, Soz and Nawhas. The play, in the final analysis, brings home the point that the Martydom of Hussain was not an end, but an inspiration instead, that has since then continued to stimulate the War for Peace. The play is performed by AMU Drama Club. Of special mention is the powerful performance by Ankit Malik, a young man hardly in his early 20s, who is seen narrating the play in chaste Urdu with ease and aplomb. The play has been written by Prof Asif Naqvi, an old timer from the prestigious Jan Natya Manch and currently the Prof of Museum Science at AMU Aligarh. It has been directed by Dr F Sherani, a playwright, director and actor of repute, currently heading the Cultural Education Centre at the AMU. The Music of the play has been composed by Meraj Nishat and AMU Music Club. Last but not the least, the play is produced by Pierrot’s Troupe – a theatre company credited with giving many new, original and entertaining productions to Hindi and Urdu theatre: Ghalib In New Delhi, Maulana Azad, Cut…Cut…Cut, Big B, Ghalib, K L Saigal, Sons of Babur, Lal Qile Ka Aakhri Mushaera, Ghalib Ke Khat, Shah Jahan –O- Mumtaz, Pakistan Aur Alzheimer’s, To Gandhi Ji With Spelling Mistakes, Raja Nahar Singh etc.  Read More...
