About Play : Four years ago on the night of 16 December, 2012 the brutal gang-rape of a 23-year old paramedical student by six men on a moving bus in the national capital shook the nation for its sheer brutality. She was named 'Nirbhaya'or 'fearless' in order to not disclose her identity and also to symbolize her fight. 'Gang of Girls' is an extension of her fight. What was Nirbhaya's fault? That she was a woman! Till date rapes continue to happen across the country to women regardless of their age, clothing or location. Will there be a day when all women can live in India without the fear of getting raped? Can we fight back? Will our voices be heard?
'Gang of Girls' will raise their voice on 16th December from the capital Delhi and will tell you several stories about one single matter - 'being a girl'. How she takes birth, how she grows up, and how she unfortunately gets raped; the mystery and complexities of a girl turning into a woman; and the fear, fantasies and desires of being a woman.
The play is a celebration of women's sexuality and the condemnation of its violation. 'Gang Of Girls' is an artistic response by a group of performers to the gang rape incidents like Nirbhaya rape case, domestic violence, suppression of women or any other form of violence against women. However, the play is not a tragic one, rather it is a humorous journey explored through an amalgamation of various dance forms such as Bharatnatyam, Contemporary, Hula-Hoop, and Hip-Hop. The hilarious yet heart touching essays from 'The Vagina Monologues', the hard hitting poetry of Taslima Nasrin, and the ugly realities of this male dominated society give flesh to the performance.
